Nearly all living things require oxygen to convert food into energy; without it, we—and billions of other organisms on Earth—would not be here.

Today, the Earth’s atmosphere contains approximately 21% oxygen, but before the emergence of more advanced life, there was no oxygen in the air—only volcanic gases such as carbon dioxide.

We owe the presence of oxygen today to microscopic life forms that began producing it as a by-product billions of years ago.
