Your family or friends may tell you how special you are, but that doesn’t come close to the truth.

In reality, you are the result of an unbroken chain of life that started over 3.5 billion years ago.

The Earth has experienced countless changes since its formation 4.5 billion years ago, many of which have been catastrophic for life.

Five mass extinctions have occurred in Earth’s history. One of those events took place almost 66 million years ago when a large asteroid struck the Earth.

The extreme conditions it created caused havoc around the globe, wiping out 75% of all life, including the non-avian dinosaurs.

If any one of those mass extinctions had not occurred, you would probably not be here.

Life would have followed a very different evolutionary path.
